What determines the result is not what happens in the session but what happens on the days in between. Sticking with it is a skill that can be learned.
One of the strongest predictors of outcome in physiotherapy is whether the person keeps up the home programme. Two sessions a week is a small share of a 168-hour week. The real change happens on the days in between.
Even so, more than half of home programmes are abandoned within the first few months. The reason is usually not lack of will but a programme that does not fit the person's life.
Keep it short. A five-minute programme done every day is worth more than a 20-minute one done weekly. Small and regular always wins.
Attach it to an existing habit. "After my morning coffee" or "right after brushing my teeth" is a far stronger anchor than "sometime during the day". A new habit sticks when it is hooked directly behind an existing one.
Keep it visible. Leave the resistance band on the arm of the sofa, not in a drawer. Equipment you cannot see does not get used.
Put it in writing. Do not rely on memory. The programme should be written down: which exercise, how many repetitions, how often.
Mark it off. Even a simple cross on a calendar clearly improves consistency. Not wanting to break the chain is a powerful motivator.
Measure. Seeing progress is the fuel for motivation. "Last month I could hold it for 20 seconds, now it is 45" is far stronger than any impression.
This is one of the most common questions in the clinic, and the answer is clear: pain usually settles before strength returns. When a programme is dropped before strength and control reach an adequate level, the complaint comes back within months.
That is why the decision to stop rests on measurement, not on how you feel. When the goal is reached the programme does not end — it becomes a maintenance programme of two or three days a week.
Missing one day does not break a programme. What breaks it is the second and third day that follow the thought "I have already missed it". The rule is simple: never skip two days in a row.
Fzt. Aydın Ali keeps home programmes short, written and doable, reassessing progress at regular intervals.

This is the question we are asked most. The short answer: at the right dose it reduces pain rather than increasing it. The long answer lies in how that dose is set.
