Scoliosis and Postural Assessment

Scoliosis is a sideways curvature of the spine seen when looking from the front. In most cases the cause is unknown and it is noticed between the ages of 10 and 15, during rapid growth. Fzt. Aydın Ali carries out postural and spinal assessment and runs the process alongside your orthopaedic doctor.

When is it needed?

  • One shoulder sitting higher than the other
  • One shoulder blade appearing more prominent
  • Asymmetric waist creases
  • Clothes hanging unevenly
  • One side of the back rising when bending forward

What we do

  • Postural analysis and forward bend test
  • Measurement and monitoring of trunk asymmetry
  • Curve-specific three-dimensional exercise
  • Breathing exercises for the rib cage
  • Trunk strengthening and postural awareness
  • Referral to an orthopaedic doctor where indicated

Why growth matters

The risk of a curve progressing is directly linked to how much growth remains. A curve detected during a growth spurt needs closer monitoring; after growth is complete the rate of progression falls markedly.

This is why noticing it early changes the path that is followed.

What exercise can and cannot do

Scoliosis-specific exercise differs from general sport or swimming: it is planned according to the direction of the curve and includes three-dimensional correction and breathing work.

Decisions about bracing or surgery belong to the orthopaedic doctor. Physiotherapy runs alongside that follow-up, not instead of it.

Frequently asked questions

Does carrying a heavy bag cause scoliosis?

No. A heavy bag can cause back pain but does not create structural scoliosis. The same is true of sitting posture.

Can scoliosis be corrected with exercise alone?

In low-degree curves, exercise and monitoring are often enough. In moderate curves it is combined with bracing, decided by your doctor.

How often is follow-up needed?

It depends on the degree of curve and remaining growth. The interval is set after the first assessment.
