Manual Therapy

Manual therapy is the hands-on part of physiotherapy: techniques applied directly to joints and soft tissue to restore movement and reduce pain. On its own it brings relief; combined with exercise it brings lasting change. Fzt. Aydın Ali therefore never uses it as a stand-alone treatment.

Manual therapy applied to the wrist and forearm

When is it needed?

  • Joint stiffness and restricted range
  • Muscle knots and localised tenderness
  • Pain and catching with certain movements
  • Tightness that returns after long static postures
  • Restriction persisting after an injury has healed

What we do

  • Assessment of joint play and end-feel
  • Joint mobilisation techniques
  • Soft tissue and trigger point work
  • Myofascial release
  • Neural mobilisation where indicated
  • Exercise to hold the range that has been gained

Why it is not used alone

Manual therapy opens a window: movement improves and pain settles. If nothing is done with that window, the body returns to its previous pattern within days. Exercise is what keeps the gain.

For that reason every session ends with the movements you will repeat at home.

What it feels like

Techniques are applied within tolerable limits. Some tenderness during soft tissue work is normal; sharp pain is not the aim and you are asked to say so at any point.

Frequently asked questions

Is manual therapy the same as massage?

No. Massage targets muscle relaxation; manual therapy is applied to a specific joint or tissue on the basis of an assessment, with a defined goal.

Will I hear a click?

Some techniques produce a sound, many do not. The sound is not a measure of success and no technique is applied without your consent.

How many sessions will I need?

It is decided after the assessment. In most cases the hands-on component is short and the exercise component continues.
